I enjoyed this reading. I think that what MAdV did was amazing. I think examples like this is what makes YouTube great. At the end of the day, this medium of film/video is just another way of self expression. A way to get people to feel something about the world around them and thats exactly what he did. I don't think it needs to be classified as a documntary or an experiental video. I think when you try to classiify something like this, it takes away from the range of things it could be. The fact that most people in this age have some form of video equipment and a computer, and we have a platform like youtube, people who would never express themselves or make statements about the world are now doing so and its adding to popular culture. Me and my friends talk about youtube videos more now than we do about the mainstream movies and tv shows we see.

  1. Im Sorry, I can not find the way to post a new thread. So I put comment.

This reading "Clive Thompson on How YouTube Changes the Way We Think" shows the one example video of MadV on youtube. "MadV—who silently performs magic tricks while wearing a Guy Fawkes mask—put up a short, cryptic video. He held his hand up to the camera, showing what he'd written on his palm: "One World. Then he urged viewers to respond."

I saw the you tube video "The Message", I felt wired, strangers said "I believe in you." Its wired. Stranger from internet, just give straight message. It was a kind art products that was created interactive communication on you tube.

    I strongly agree this ideas

"This is what's so fascinating about online video culture. DIY tools for shooting, editing, and broadcasting video aren't just changing who uses the medium. They're changing how we use it. We're developing a new language of video—forms that let us say different things and maybe even think in different ways."

Yes. We can communicate all over the world because of internet. I can speak my family in Japanese really countryside (My family internet was still dial up till this summer!!!) on skype.

Now DIY of making video, music, pics became so easy.
Like Michel Gondry`s "Be Kind Rewind", people starts to enjoy make movie by themselves.

  2. I agree with the idea that YouTube has increased the exposure of people's self expression. It may not be positive expression or thoughtful comments about the world, but it has increased communication between various people and cultures around the globe. Hobbies and trends have also become shared experiences through YouTube. People post videos and comment on one anothers channels to create a dialogue that would not have existed prior. I think that YouTube has definitely changed how we think.

  3. The Message was interesting and it kinda made me feel good. The internet does a good job of bringing people closer and when we put our videos up, we put up our art and a part of ourselves and we are able to express in a new way/medium we didn't couldn't or wouldn't before. He shouldn't have called MadV a 'weirdo' though, I think that's just wrong because MadV isn't wierd, he's unique and looking at things through a different perspective and we need leaders like that in this world!

  4. I would like to comment on peoples impression of you-tube as a forum for posting ideas and making these ideas relate. Clive Thomson would have to agree with me when I say that You tube not only changes the way people look at videos, it opens the medium up for everyone. Making you tube in a way like to Truman show, depicting the random interests and commonality between countless people. You-Tube arguably brings people of similar interests together. I know myself I admire the piano and people who can play it well. I've commented on many orchestra pieces I've seen posted on you-tube. There is also a strong following of artist who take music from popular Anime's and movies and transcribe them into piano music. The results are posted with frequency on you-tube. Providing a forum for new artist to express their unique perspectives. This "interactive" TV is much more adaptable and will likely still be around long after things like the evening news have fallen by the wayside as a thing of the past.

  5. After watching the video referred to in Clive Thompson's article "How Youtube Changes the Way We Think", I must say I have mixed feelings. In some ways I dislike youtube, and the availability of being able to publish videos on the web for all to see. Being a FMA major it somewhat cheapens the experience for me...knowing that anyone can post anything for the world to watch.

However, at the same time it is also interesting the way youtube can also be a great gathering of ideas and concepts. Some well constructed videos and scripts are encouraging and entertaining to watch. And it's true...some videos can change the way you think. Since everyone of course is different not everyone sees things in the same way. But then there is a chance that you can stumble across youtube and find someone who "gets" you with their posted content and ideas. It is so easy too just to link from a video you were looking for to one you never expected to watch. Youtube is a great connector and a spot for ideas, at the same time I just also feel a bit hesitant about the sheer volume of randomly posted videos.

  6. What interests me about MadV's video is that it is a very simple experiment in adding value to a format defined by its cheapness. Built-in web cams and microphones are among the lowest common denominators of recording equipment, and yet this is the technology used to record the majority of youtube video blogs. On top of that, the already grainy image and sound of these videos must be compressed for the web, causing even more distortion of the recording.

When you compare the product of this process with the product of a person shooting on something like HD video or 16mm film, mediums which are lightyears ahead of video blogs in terms of both complexity and expense, what that extra time and money adds to the film or video becomes audibly and visually apparent. These mediums inherent value lies not only in the human element involved their creation but also in their resolution and bit depth.

YouTube video blogging depends on countless technologies stretching from the top of your computer screen along national communications infrastructures all the way to incredibly advanced servers, which were designed and utilized by thousands of people into a global system created specifically for the cheap and easy authoring and publishing of video.

The question MadV's project answers is "How do you add value to a medium that is designed to be cheap?" The answer is human labor, the only production expense that both an HD Video and and a video blog can have in equal amounts. MadV's project utilizes the medium of instant internet video to create something that would be impossible for someone to create with only an HD cam, a video collage featuring dozens of collaborators who have never met and probably will never meet in person. It can be extremely difficult to make the act of one person clicking a button and talking into a crappy camera worth even a full play. If you have enough people clicking the button, however, they don't even need to talk! They can add value just by holding their hands up to the camera.

  7. Youtube is a great way of exposing anything. Anyone with access to the internet has most likely been on youtube before. Not only does it serve as an entertainment center on the internet, but also it is a great source for obtaining information. Like google, what ever you type in the search engine will give you different sources. People tend to put videos of documentaries or tutorials of things for learning new information. Visual aids always seem to be a greater help when learning information.

  8. I agree with what everone is saying about Youtube. It really is a phenomonon, and I love a forum where everyone has the ability to contribute. What MadV did was very interesting beacuse I never would have imagined that one single post could reach so many diffrent people, and even more interesting was that Youtube has given creative license to anyone who wants to spend the time to create something. Communication tools like Youtube, beacuse they are free, are bringing the globe together and making the world a smaller place.

  9. Hey, I seem to have forgotten my password to my old account so here is my new one. I have to say that youtube just may be one of the biggest websites in history. That along with myspace and facebook are pretty much the only sites that most people will go onto at least 5 times a week. Its no shock that youtube is so big, its fun and easy, also anyone can do it.

I really liked the MadV music video. I liked how you didn't know what they were writing till the 2nd half of the video when it was revealed what was written on their hands.
It reminded me of the Van Halen Video Right Now which was also used in the Crystal Pepsi Ads about 15 years ago.
